Session 5- Id vs. Hearkening unto God
As we contemplated how to share the original struggle that has plagued humans, and remains an even bigger problem today, we realized that we just needed to return to the beginning of it all. In the first book of the bible we are told how God created everything including humans (Genesis). God loved this first couple very much. They were His children, His friends. They were one with God. There were no secrets. They shared everything. They spent time together. They talked. He was training them in the way they should go, just like parents train children, this course and those helping other believers are to help train up our brothers and sisters in the faith. (Proverbs 22:6, Hebrews 5:13-14) Then the humans were beguiled into disobedience, betrayal, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16), which caused them to lose the desire to hear or hearken unto God but to rely on their ‘id’. God gave them, and us, freewill to learn valuable lessons. However, many have and will allow their id to rule them rather than accept the love of God. These immortal beings spiritually died that very day and their physical deaths were to follow. What is the id? We found this definition via Google: The id is the part of the mind in which innate instinctive impulses and primary processes are manifest. Compare with ego, superego, unconscious mind, mind, imagination, inner self, and innermost self. In 2 Corinthians 10:5-6 we read; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; and having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. However, if we do not fight our id, and give into it, in time you and nearly every human you know who is running on a heavy dose of ‘id’ will be given over to it and have no idea or desire to know that God can and wants to communicate with them personally, as friends, family, and loved ones (Romans 1:24, Ephesians 4:22-24, Galatians 5:16-18, 1 Peter 1:14, 2 Peter 1:5-9). Have patience, and know that by the end of this course you will have a closer relationship with your Heavenly Father, know that you have a purpose and calling, and your desire to hearken unto God will be able to bless the lives of all around you. You will no longer desire to be one of those that remain chained to their id, abounding in sin, and not acknowledging God, as they are leaning on their own knowledge and abilities to get by in this world (Proverbs 3:5, Matthew 24:12, 2 Timothy 2:15, Matthew 4:4). We are so excited to see that you desire to be an exception to the rule. You are seeking and you will find (Jeremiah 29:13). Many are called but few are chosen (Matthew 22:14). So many Saints stop short of a divine ‘Holy Spirit’ encounter because they are satisfied with good theology. I became painfully aware of this truth in 1993 when I attended a local congregation. I had been attended for years, this was the time every word I heard was one I had already heard time after time. It was eerie. I left somewhat discouraged, as I became aware that I had good theology, but they were not helping anyone receive the ‘mystery’. People were not instructed on how to live daily, communicate, or witness as Jesus did here on earth. He talked with His Father and obeyed every word, daily. Painful as that lesson was, I discovered I had to learn the ‘mystery’. I did not want to be a hearer of the word and not a doer any longer. I had to make a life style, mental and spiritual change. I knew the answer had to be tucked into the pages of the New Testament. With a whole lot of prayer, many hours and long nights pouring over the many clues, the light turned on and what was hidden in plain sight was exposed to the light of day. Suddenly encounters with God were through the Holy Spirit were not only possible but essential. Living and teaching a lifestyle of complete dependence on and guidance by the Lord rather than what I had always done would be required to get me where I wanted to go. God used many authors over many centuries to transcribe His ‘Love Letter’, the bible, for us. He made sure we knew our history. He even included a look into the future, and tucked various places in the bible that gave us the crumbs needed to break two thousand years of silence and begin to hear from Him again, as in days of old, but better. God wants each of us to develop a deep and meaningful relationship. Many people know ‘of’ God but have no true interaction with Him. Our id makes us believe we are in charge of our own destiny. This is true to the extent that we are blazing a path straight to the darkest pit in Hell. God wants us to taste Him. He doesn’t want us just to know about Him in our mind; He wants us to taste His sweetness in our heart and savor all of His words. Here are two verses showing that God’s people have tasted Him: • Psalms 119:103: “How sweet are your words to my taste! Sweeter than honey to my mouth!” • 1 Peter 2:2-3: “As newborn babies, long for the guileless milk of the word in order that by it you may grow unto salvation, if you have tasted that the Lord is good.” God uses many occasions such as people, places, smells, tastes, and things, in His attempt to communicate His love for and to us. He made sure that you were drawn to this site, to this course of study, for that very reason. He wants to speak with you in a personal, compassionate, meaningful way. Within these lessons the words of the bible, the words of God, that He has reserved for you from the foundation of the world and the existence of time will begin unfold, allowing you to hear and heed Him, and thus draw you, His child and heir, closer to His bosom. Exercise 5- We ask you now to please return to your quiet place again and pull out that notebook, journal, and writing implement or another sheet in your PC, laptop or phone where you kept all of your notes on yesterday’s session. In this exercise you will need to find at least 5-10 verses in the bible that tells who or what is God, plus least 5-10 verses in the bible that tells who or what the Holy Spirit is and write down the titles, attributes, or characters, followed by the addresses: book, chapter and verse. Next do the same thing regarding ‘who you are to God’. Finally write down what you believe it means to ‘hearken unto God’. When you have completed Exercise 5 you are able to relax until the next lesson.
