Session 7 – Setting your mind on things above.
Eve allowed herself to be beguiled. She became lost in the moment and overwhelmed with new thoughts that were strictly from the id. Paul pleaded with the Colossians to not be swayed. They had heard the true gospel, died to self, awoke as new creatures in Christ and yet were on the verge of losing their blessings. We have been so very far removed from the simplicity of those first followers that we must study to show that we are worthy (2 Timothy 2:15), run the race (Hebrews 12:2), and do the works laid out for us (Proverb 24:12), in the spirit (Galatians 5:16-17). Colossians 3:2–5 instructs us to ‘Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry’. You, as a child of God have a precious gift, the ability to restore your mind, restructure your thoughts, because your thoughts are powerful. You alone can turn away from the id via the Holy Spirit or allow it to totally manipulate your life. We are staying on course today with another written exercise. Exercise 7- Return to your quiet place; pull out whatever you’ve been using to keep all of your notes, and write down everything that keeps you from hearing and heeding the voice of God. Write those now before you read one more sentence. Let’s look at the first two children God created. Adam lived in the Spirit. When God told him he needed his help to work in garden, he was happy to help. Eve, on the other hand, was swayed by an outside influence and desired the things the world had to offer, thus she began to live in the id. Her bad choices of listening to others, defying God, and corrupting her husband, happened because of the influence that changed her thoughts. She caused both Adam and herself to grieve God, lose their home, and the ripple effect of her sins effect all that live today. The id normally reacts out of selfishness and greed in all situations that can be used its advantage. The id is power hungry, dominating, and demanding. The Holy Spirit is aware of everything but only reacts with love or one of the many attributes of love or characters of Christ. As to today’s exercise, notice how you relate to your thoughts. Do you judge them as good or bad, right or wrong? At the end of the day make a new entry in your notebook about how you perceived you thoughts throughout the day, and how you related to the thoughts.
